Today would have been artist Sven Berlin's birthday. Born in 1911, in Sydenham just outside London he went on stage as an adagio dancer in the music halls until 1938 when he left for Cornwall to become an artist. In 1953, disillusioned with the modernist movement, he left for the New Forest, Hampshire, in a gypsy caravan with his second wife Juanita. And here's a link to the Pathe News film which shows how they were living... His colourful life and work is described in our book Sven Berlin Out of the Shadows - the illustration is a self portrait in oils which dates from 1954. If you need something bright, exciting and inspiring this is a good place to start. What an amazing life he led!
